Welcome to Highgrove Farm and Commons – a brand new farm on Pender Island, BC. The property was previously logged and in need of a lot of TLC. Over the next few years, we’re hoping to apply a combination of regenerative farming practices to build the soil and heal the natural systems that have been badly impacted.
Regenerative Agriculture draws on decades of scientific research and application that identifies a set of principles and practices that increase biodiversity, enrich soils, improve watersheds, and enhance ecosystems. It captures carbon in soil and above ground biomass, aiming to reverse the trend of atmospheric carbon emissions, while increasing food security and community resilience.
First up, chickens and pigs. In the next month or so, we hope to introduce piglets to the farm. Pigs are natures tillers and they’ll be breaking up the soil in our future garden locations (while adding their own special mix of nutrients to the soil). After that, we’ll be building our first chicken tractor for some fresh eggs and a bit of pest control.
We’ll be posting updates on our projects and progress here as well as on Twitter, Instagram and our Facebook page. Follow along if any of those are part of your social media diet. You can also listen in on our Slack Channel for real time action on the farm.
